Within the post-suburban parts of cities the lines between city and countryside blur the boundaries. What is city? What is countryside?
Even in a densely populated city like Munich, there are numerous open spaces. Some of them are large and planned as recreational areas such as the Nymphenburger Park or the Isarauen, others are simply unused areas. In fact, there are also areas within the city limits that remain in their historical use and defy the housing rush.
One of these untouched areas can be found in the North of Munich between Feldmoching, Ludwigsfeld and the Fasanerie. The vast areas between the Feldmoching and Fasanerie lakes are covered by agricultural land, belonging to farmers from the former street village of Feldmoching.
It seemed only natural to my team of two architecture and two landscape architecture students to find an urban design for this topic by dealing with the qualities of such an environment rich in tradition. A population that has plenty of fresh air on the outskirts of the city, but hardly any parks to speak of, has long since taken to the field paths as jogging tracks, walking trails and excursion destinations. In our opinion, these people only need the appropriate valorisation of "their" landscape. Accordingly, we have decided not only to preserve the open space, but to make it the main component of a park. This outlines to the North-East of Feldmoching and connects on the other side to the South through a new neighbourhood. The park will extend between the lake Feldmoching and lake Fasanerie. The connection between the two lakes will be designed as a boulevard where cyclists can engage in sporting activities and those seeking recreation can stroll. The boulevard leads into a square at lake Feldmoching. On the one hand, this is the entrance to the park for people coming from the city, on the other hand, it is the access to the shopping street. A new underground station connects this new centre with the main city of Munich. Building height and density are high in this area. Towards the existing edges, this is increasingly loosened up, creating a flowing transition. The scenic charm of Munich's north can thus be preserved in the form of Mochinger Park, while it is showcased by a strong urban boundary.
